Why Do Dogs Eat Grass? Is It Dangerous?

Grass-eating is common and usually harmless — but the reasons and the warning signs are worth knowing.

Most dogs eat grass at some point, and in the vast majority of cases it is nothing to worry about.

The main reasons

Dietary fiber. Grass adds fiber and can aid digestion for dogs on low-fiber diets.
Taste and texture. Spring grass is sweet and some dogs simply enjoy it.
Occasional stomach upset. Some dogs eat grass when mildly nauseous, though vomiting afterward is not a reliable pattern.
Vet warning: If grass-eating is sudden and compulsive, accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea, drooling or loss of appetite, contact a vet — and never let a dog graze on treated lawns.
