Puppy Feeding Schedule by Age

Meal frequency changes fast in the first year. Here is the schedule our vet recommends, from 8 weeks to adulthood.

Puppies eat three to four times a day at 8 weeks, twice a day by six months — the transition is where most owners slip.

Step by Step

1. 8–12 weeks: four meals a day

Small stomachs, fast metabolism. Space meals evenly across waking hours.

2. 3–6 months: three meals a day

Drop the mid-morning meal last. Watch body condition, not the bag's maximum.

3. 6–12 months: two meals a day

Most breeds switch here. Large breeds may stay on puppy food longer — ask your vet.

4. Adulthood: twice a day, forever

Once-a-day feeding is widely discouraged for most adult dogs.

The Bottom Line

Follow the age ladder, measure with a real cup, and your veterinarian's body-condition score does the rest.
