A simple weight-based rule plus three cheap tricks to keep cats hydrated.

Cats are famously under-hydrated. A weight-based target and a few environment tweaks fix most of it.

The rule of thumb

Most cats need roughly 40–60 ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day — about a cup for a 4–5 kg cat — and wet food can supply most of it.

  • Multiple water stations. One bowl per cat plus one, placed away from food and litter.
  • Keep it fresh. Rinse and refill daily; cats reject stale water.
  • Try a fountain. Running water increases intake for many cats.
  • Vet warning: A cat drinking dramatically more (or less) than usual for more than a day or two can signal kidney disease, diabetes or a urinary blockage. Measure water intake and tell your vet.
